Riga


Riga is a capital of Latvia. It is also biggest city of Latvia. Population of Riga is a slightly more than 800 thousand people. But area of Riga is 307 square kilometers. Riga is divided in 6 regions - Centrs, Kurzemes, Latgales, Ziemelu, Kurzemes and Vidzemes. Although "Centrs" region is smallest, there are the biggest amount of architectural monuments. It is so because at the center of this region there is so called "Old Riga".

The Old town of Riga is a unique architectural ensamble combining diverse buildings of Romanasque, Gothic, Baroque and Eclecticism modern styles from 13th to 19th centuries. Old Riga is located on the bank of the longest river in Latvia - Daugava, in the territory of 60 hectares. It is separated from other city districts with the river and city canal. During ages the town of Riga surrounded by a stone wall has been developing on a restricted space. Narrow winding streets composing complicated labyrinth. Landplots were small and houses stood very close, so neigbours living across the street from each other could shake hands without leaving their homes. Now the narrowest street of Old Riga is Rosena street. The year of 1201 is widely accepted as a "year of foundation of Riga". This year Livonian bishop Albert chose this place for his residence and Riga became the centre of Livonian state Geographical location of the settlement was exclusively favourable, specially for merchants and missionaries from Germany. They were interested to settle here and open the way to new market to Russia.
